We are thrilled to hear that we have been selected as a finalist for this year’s White Rose Awards in the category ‘Inns & Restaurant Rooms’. Hard work and dedication pays off! Well done to all the other finalists, the winner will be announced at the award ceremony on Monday 12th November. The Awards recognise the very best of this county’s thriving tourism industry including pubs and restaurants, food and drink, hotels and caravan sites, visitor attractions, cultural events and customer service.
Sir Gary Verity DL, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:
“The White Rose Awards are the largest and most prestigious in the UK’s hospitality and tourism industry and we have some really exciting finalists this year from both new and established businesses. The awards are a brilliant opportunity to shine the spotlight on the fantastic experiences to be had in Yorkshire. As well as the coveted gongs expect a night of first class entertainment – an event not to be missed!”
Professor Colin Mellor, Chair of the White Rose Award Judges, said:
“Winning a White Rose Award is a real accolade for Yorkshire’s tourism businesses and the task of shortlisting has been harder than ever. The standard of entries has been exceptional which is evidenced by the strength of the shortlists. It is testimony to the remarkable range and quality of the region’s tourism offer. With such tough competition, and a record 170 entries, selecting the winners this year is going to be extremely difficult.”
Thank you to everyone for all your continued support.
At Provenance Inns, we aim to provide our guests with the finest locally sourced produce.
That is why we have collaborated with Warrendale Wagyu to make our Black and Blue Yorkshire Wagyu Burger, Harrogate Blue, Skinny Fries, Black Sheep Beer Battered Onion Rings, Yorkshire Relish & Pickles.
Warrendale Wagyu from York was established in 2017 and is one of the largest wagyu herds in the UK, consisting of both full blood and cross bred wagyu beef. Wagyu beef is a softer, more flavoursome meat and contains a higher percentage of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, making it a healthier product as well.

Style Contracts, the design company who, in collaboration with Averil Blundell Interior Design and Bowman Riley Architects, transformed the West Park into a stunning boutique restaurant, bar and hotel, have received the prestigious Best Hotel Interior Design award at the recent Northern Design Awards held on 21st November 2014.
Katie McCarthy, design director for Style Contracts said…
“Flanked by boutique shops and a gourmet deli, this site was in a prime location and needed to reflect the prestigious nature of the Stray. With a sophisticated population in Harrogate and the association of a destination spa town, luxury and comfort were key shapers of our design. Style Contracts developed and manufactured bespoke restaurant, bar and bedroom furniture along with the bar areas and specialist joinery products. Super long chesterfields gave a plush feel for dining in the bar and mobile booth seating suited the client’s need to change around the layouts.
For the bedrooms, we designed and produced bespoke furniture to create a luxury town house feel – deeply padded fluted headboards, bespoke armchairs, coffee tables with turned legs and desk drawers fronted in stone veneers. The wooden finishes were all painted in a classic Farrow and Ball grey to create a calm feel to the rooms and unify the 9 schemes for the client’s own chosen bedroom fabrics.
Provenance Inns have an award winning reputation as a traditional Yorkshire inn collection so we were keen to bring a hint of traditionalism to the concept. We created a bespoke design fretwork with a gentlemanly style circular pattern which is the feature wall upon entering the restaurant. This was echoed in the reception desk and the bar frontage. A former alleyway with stone archways was incorporated into the restaurant with brass orb lights reminiscent of traditional street lighting. A wine wall with a backdrop of natural stone referencing Yorkshire’s countryside stone dry walls encloses a library of wine lockers to give a sense of home for the regular customer with a taste for more expensive wines and spirits.
A wall feature inspired by the Harrogate Stray was designed and fabricated, with abstract leaf patterns laser cut out of corten steel. Corten steel was chosen to juxtapose against the traditional elements already present in the design. Once artificially rusted it created a beautiful rust marbled into the duller tones of the corten. In front of this, we hung cage pendants and individual laser cut filigree style copper oak leaves intertwining amongst the cables to create a modern chandelier whilst bringing aspects of the iconic stray parkland into play.”
We are pleased to welcome our new Managing Director Rupert Farquharson.
Provenance Inns has appointed a new managing director as the seven-strong gastropub and hotel operator gears up for the next phase of its growth.
Rupert Farquharson was most recently managing director of Norfolk brewer Woodforde’s, and in a 25-year career has also held roles with Adnams, where he was retail director, as well as with Bass Brewers, Diageo and the Wine Society.
Chris Blundell, chairman and co-founder of North Yorkshire-based Provenance Inns, said Farquharson’s experience would be “invaluable” in “maintaining the impeccably high service and quality standards that mark out our existing pubs and hotels” in the competitive hospitality market, as well as “ensuring that we are ready to make the most of new opportunities”.
Farquharson added: “Provenance Inns has established a strong reputation as a leading hospitality operator, both across our trading area and nationally, and the opportunity to be part of this hugely professional team, both at senior level and in each of the pubs and hotels, is wonderful.
“In a market where consumers have more choice than ever, and the economic outlook is likely to challenge us, I’ve had to hit the ground running. However, I’m confident that we will continue to take Provenance Inns from strength to strength.”
Provenance Inns was founded in 2010 by Blundell, a former director of supermarket group Morrisons, and Michael Ibbotson, who stepped down as managing director earlier this year. The company currently has 275 employees and a turnover of about £10m.
The seven businesses in the Provenance Inns portfolio are: The Black Bull Inn, Moulton; the Carpenters Arms, Felixkirk; the Crown & Cushion, Welburn; the Oak Tree, Helperby; the Punch Bowl, Marton cum Grafton; the West Park Hotel, Harrogate; and the most recent addition, the Cleveland Tontine, Staddlebridge, acquired in 2016.
We are pleased to announce the Punch Bowl Inn has been named as the Best pub in North Yorkshire with the National Pub & Bar awards 2018. Paulo Pinto, General Manager of The Punch Bowl Inn, collected the award and met with Tristan O’Hana, Editorial Director of the Pub & Bar Magazine to collect his award.
“We were hugely impressed with the standards of your entry, as well as the wider operations of Provenance, which we know well. Your training initiatives are most impressive, as is the dedication you clearly have for the food and drink you serve. What’s more, to see a five year investment plan in place shows us that there is a positive strategy/vision for the future of the site. Combine this with the promotional and communication efforts you go to, and you can see why The Punch Bowl Inn has won this award.”

Congratulations to Avram Dragos (Dee) who is Provenance’s Employee of the Month for December 2017.
Dee has worked at Provenance’s first hotel West Park, since it’s opening in 2014 and his dedication, excellent customer service and enthusiasm has never wavered. In recent weeks, over the course of a busy and at times difficult period for the business, Dee has been a constant support – never losing his positive attitude.
He has worked extra hours and has taken on the challenge of the bar during our busiest trading period – learning how to manage the stock and deal with suppliers as well as assisting in managing rotas and wages.
His customer service has always been exceptional but in recent weeks, feedback we have received has been second to none. Many of our guests mention him in their feedback and most recently, one of our partnership companies, Harrogate International Festivals, has specifically mentioned his dedication, personality and fantastic customer service during their recent dinner and drinks, when they were entertaining their sponsors.
Dee is showing how much of a team player he is an is increasingly showing a maturity in guiding more junior members of staff.
A huge well done to Dee and everyone who was nominated.
- Sami Foster – Cleveland Tontine
- Ian Baty – Punch Bowl
- Tommy Hunter – Carpenters Arms
- Michael Lowcock – Oak Tree
- Nasser Cherfi (DJ) – Black Bull
